As some of you may have noticed in the grocery stores there is a very significant shortage of eggs available at this time. Having delivered eggs for over 10 years, I have never seen anything like this.
From my research, this is being caused by a combination of people staying home and cooking more with eggs, stress baking (people tend to bake more for family and friends when under stress) and panic hoarding eggs; specifically meaning people buying an extra dozen or two than usual, not necessarily building an egg carton bunker.
Typically, we order directly from Oakdell Eggs and they have zero problems fulfilling our order. Their hens are laying as much as ever, but demand has substantially increased in the last few weeks. It is complicated by the fact that the eggs are being allocated based on what the consumption for each customer was last year. Meaning, since we just recently started our delivery service we are at the very bottom of the pecking order (no pun intended!). Although this puts us in a really tight spot we totally understand the reasoning behind their decision to allocate us less eggs when we order.
In the very rare occasion we have ran short in the past it is easy to make a trip to the grocery store and buy 30-60 dozen at a time of comparable or the same eggs. This last weekend we went to 8 different stores and they all had a purchase limit of 1-2 dozen per customer. Currently, we have orders for over 250 dozen eggs each week.
We are doing our best to acquire eggs over the next few weeks. It should be between 2-4 weeks until we can resume receiving our full order but nothing is set in stone. We will update your invoices to remove charges for eggs that are not delivered in the meantime and apologize for any inconvenience.
Although it pains me to say this, for the time being please consider going to the store and purchasing eggs if you need eggs. You should have the ability to buy 1 or 2 dozen eggs when you go to a grocery store without issue. If you do happen to buy eggs from elsewhere and don't need them from us, please remove them from your order for the week you will not need them. This will really assist us reallocate eggs to people that don't have the opportunity or ability to go to the store and purchase some.
I believe we our supplies are great of all other products; the only potential additional shortage issue being cottage cheese but at this time they seem to be barely meeting demand.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work diligently to meet the needs of our Wasatch Community and currently don't anticipate any other issues like this, but these are unprecedented times.
